Trump cancels another round of assaults on Vnezuela
The decision follows a dramatic operation last Saturday in which US special forces carried out a raid in Caracas and detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro along with his wife, Cilia Flores.
In the aftermath of that operation, Trump demanded “total access” to Venezuela’s oil resources and stated that the United States would “run” the country until a “proper transition” of power was achieved. Those actions drew strong condemnation from Russia and numerous other BRICS and Global South countries.
In a public statement, Trump said, “I have canceled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks, which looks like it will not be needed, however, all ships will stay in place for safety and security.”
He added that major US energy companies would invest at least $100 billion in Venezuela, referring to the investors as “Big Oil,” and noted that he was scheduled to meet executives from leading American oil firms at the White House later on Friday.
Trump also pointed to Caracas’ recent decision to free “large numbers of political prisoners,” describing the move as “a very important and smart gesture.”
Late Tuesday, Venezuelan authorities began releasing several high-profile detainees, including opposition figures, framing the move as an effort “to seek peace.”
Among those freed were former presidential candidate Enrique Marquez and former lawmaker and businessman Biagio Pilieri, both of whom had been held at El Helicoide, a well-known detention center in the capital. Officials later confirmed that five Spanish nationals were also released and placed on a flight back to Spain.
