Europe's EV Sales Climb 4 Percent in Q1 of 2025
Total new vehicle registrations hit 2.82 million units between January and March, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association showed. When factoring in the broader continental market — encompassing EU member states, European Free Trade Association countries, and the UK — sales climbed 4.1% to 3.52 million units.
Among the bloc's heavyweight markets, Italy led the charge with a 9.2% surge in registrations, trailed closely by Spain at 7.6%.
Battery-electric vehicles emerged as the standout performers of the quarter, with registrations skyrocketing 32.5% year-on-year to 546,937 units — capturing a 19.4% share of all new car sales. Italy blazed the trail in EV adoption, posting a staggering 65.7% jump in battery-electric registrations. Spain and Germany were not far behind, recording gains of 41.6% and 41.3%, respectively.
Hybrid-electric models continued their stranglehold on the broader market, representing 38.6% of total sales as registrations advanced 12.8% to 1.08 million units. Plug-in hybrid sales also posted robust momentum, rising 29.7% to 268,344 units.
The surge in clean-energy vehicles, however, came at a steep cost for traditional powertrains. Petrol car registrations tumbled 18.2%, with market share eroding to just 22.6%, while diesel registrations contracted 15.7%, shrinking their slice of the market to 7.7%.
March alone delivered a particularly strong signal of recovery, with total sales jumping 12.5% year-on-year to reach 1.15 million units.
